How to Calculate 3MF Volume for 3D Printing

Volume is useful for comparing model sizes, estimating solid-model material weight and checking whether repeated parts add up as expected. For 3MF, the important detail is that a file can contain several objects, repeated build items and transforms. The useful total is therefore the volume of the resolved print build, not merely a number from the first stored object.

Use the resolved build volume

This total includes all resolved build items, including repeated placements and supported transforms. For example, if a small part is placed four times in one build, the total reflects all four placed instances.

Why 3MF volume can differ from an STL workflow

An STL is normally a single set of unitless triangles. A 3MF can describe a print build with a declared unit, multiple model objects and placement information. That structure is useful, but it means volume must be calculated after the build is resolved.

If you compare a 3MF with an exported STL, make sure you are comparing the same intended build. An STL export may contain one object, while the 3MF project may contain several placed copies.

Check whether the mesh can support a reliable volume

Volume is most meaningful for a closed, consistently oriented surface. A mesh with holes or ambiguous topology may still produce a number, but that number might not represent the amount of enclosed material.

Estimate solid-model material weight

Once volume is shown in cubic centimetres, a simple solid-model estimate is:

weight in grams = volume in cm³ × material density in g/cm³

For example, a 20 cm³ fully solid model with a density of 1.24 g/cm³ has an estimated solid-model weight of 24.8 g. Use the density supplied by your filament manufacturer when possible.

This is not a slicer estimate or a price quote. Infill percentage, wall count, top and bottom layers, supports, purge, brim and failed prints can all change actual material use.
