How to Convert STL to 3MF for 3D Printing
Converting an STL to 3MF can make the intended unit explicit for compatible slicers, but it does not turn a geometry-only file into a complete print project.
Why convert an STL to 3MF?
STL is widely supported, but it stores triangles without declaring whether their coordinates represent millimetres, inches or another unit. A basic 3MF can declare that unit. This is useful when a receiving application understands 3MF and you want to reduce ambiguity about scale.
Identify the intended STL scale
Start with the model’s documentation, CAD source or known intended measurement. Millimetres are common for desktop printing, but they are not guaranteed. Use the STL Dimensions Checker to compare the coordinates with the expected physical size before selecting a unit.

What the conversion preserves
The generated 3MF contains the same triangle geometry and your chosen unit declaration. Choosing a unit describes existing coordinates; it does not automatically resize them. Conversion cannot add detail, repair defects or infer information absent from the STL.
What STL cannot provide
STL has no slicer settings, material assignments, colours or print profile to transfer. The result is deliberately a basic 3MF mesh, not a recovered original design or print setup.
Keep the original STL
Keep the source STL as well as the converted file, especially when you may need to compare imports, retry a different unit or trace the source geometry later.
