How to Estimate Filament Weight From a 3MF File
A 3MF file can help you estimate how much material a print may use, but the result is an estimate—not a replacement for your slicer’s final filament calculation.
The starting point is model volume. A larger solid volume generally needs more material, but actual filament use depends on the print settings you choose.
Calculate model volume
Upload the file to the 3MF Volume Calculator. It reports the volume of the resolved mesh geometry and can provide a material-weight estimate.
Choose the correct unit and material density. The same model volume weighs differently in PLA, PETG, ABS and filled filaments.
Understand the difference between volume and print weight
A volume calculator works from the model’s solid geometry. Your slicer may print that model partly hollow using infill.
Actual material use depends on:
- infill percentage and pattern
- wall/perimeter count
- top and bottom layers
- supports
- brim or raft
- purge material for multi-colour printing
Use the calculator for an early estimate and your slicer for the final print-planning figure.
Check mesh health first
Volume is most dependable when the model forms a closed, consistently oriented surface. Before relying on the result, use the 3MF Quality Checker and, where relevant, the 3MF Watertight Checker.
A model with holes or non-manifold geometry can produce an unreliable enclosed-volume calculation.
Use the estimate for planning
A rough weight estimate is useful when deciding whether you have enough filament, comparing design variants or estimating material cost before slicing.
Then open the model in the 3MF Viewer, confirm its dimensions and produce a final slice with your intended printer profile. The slicer remains the best source for the actual material estimate because it knows the print settings that will determine how much filament is deposited.

Is a 3MF volume calculation the same as filament used?
No. Model volume describes the solid geometry. Actual filament use depends on infill, wall count, supports, brim and slicer settings.
Which filament density should I use?
Use the density for the material you plan to print. PLA, PETG, ABS and filled materials have different densities.
Can a broken 3MF give an unreliable volume result?
Yes. Holes, open surfaces and inconsistent orientation can prevent dependable enclosed-volume calculations.
