How to Tell if a 3MF File Is Watertight

A watertight 3MF has no open edges in its resolved mesh surface. In practical 3D-printing terms, it gives the slicer a clearer closed boundary for determining the inside and outside of a part.

3MF files can contain more than one object and can place objects repeatedly in a build. That means watertightness should be checked on the geometry prepared for the print, not only on the first object stored inside the package.

Check the resolved build geometry

Use the 3MF Watertight Checker. It checks the resolved build geometry for open edges, including supported build-item and component transforms.

An open edge is used by only one triangle. It often indicates a hole, a missing face or an incomplete surface. A closed result means no open edges were found in the checked build geometry.

Separate parts can still be correct

A 3MF build may contain several unrelated objects: for example, a lid and a container, several copies of a small part, or a multi-part assembly arranged on one build plate. Separate closed parts do not automatically make the file fail. What matters is whether each intended surface is closed and whether the parts are arranged as you expect.

Open the file in the 3MF Viewer if you need to confirm what the build contains before running checks.

Watertight is not the same as manifold

A closed surface can still contain non-manifold edges, internal faces or inconsistent orientation. These can make the surface ambiguous even when it has no holes. If you need a broader topology assessment, run the 3MF Manifold Checker.

Use the 3MF Quality Checker when you want one report covering several common mesh issues, including invalid coordinates, degenerate faces, duplicate faces, open edges, non-manifold edges and orientation concerns.

What to do if the result finds open edges

  1. Inspect the source model or the 3MF build to identify the intended part.
  2. Repair the geometry in the source application or an appropriate mesh-repair workflow.
  3. Save the repaired file under a new name.
  4. Run the watertight and quality checks again before slicing.

InspectMesh reports mesh health but does not repair files. Even a watertight result is not a guarantee of a successful print: wall thickness, supports, orientation, printer setup and slicer settings still matter.
