Does 3MF Keep Colours, Materials and Print Settings?
3MF can keep much more context than STL, but it is not a promise that every program will reproduce a print project exactly. The format can describe mesh geometry, units, object placement, materials and colours. Slicers can also add their own project information, which may only be fully understood by that slicer or a compatible version.
What a 3MF can retain
A well-supported 3MF can retain named objects, multiple build items, their transforms, declared units, colour assignments and material information. This makes it useful for colour-capable prints and builds with several parts. It can also carry metadata that makes a project easier to identify later.
Why print settings are less portable
Layer height, supports, infill, temperatures and printer profiles are often specific to the slicer and printer that created the file. Another slicer may open the geometry while ignoring those settings, substituting defaults, or asking you to select a compatible printer. Treat an imported 3MF as a project to review, not as a ready-to-run job.
Check before slicing
- Keep the original 3MF and note the slicer and printer it came from.
- Open it in the 3MF Viewer to inspect the resolved model and expected build items.
- Check size and usable build volume with the 3MF Dimensions Checker.
- In your slicer, explicitly verify material, colour, supports and printer profile.
Do not use STL as a project backup
Exporting an STL is useful for a geometry-only or legacy workflow, but it flattens the resolved geometry and drops the surrounding 3MF information. Does every 3MF file preserve slicer settings?
No. A slicer may store settings in its own 3MF extensions, and another program can ignore or reinterpret them. Check the imported project before printing.
Does converting a 3MF to STL keep colours?
No. STL is a geometry-only format, so a converted STL cannot retain 3MF colours, materials, units, build items or print settings.
Can 3MF store more than one object?
Yes. A 3MF can include multiple objects, placements and component references, though support for every feature depends on the application opening it.
