How to Open a 3MF File

A 3MF file can contain more than a simple 3D mesh, so the best way to open it depends on what you want to do. Use a browser viewer to inspect geometry, or a compatible slicer or modelling application to prepare a print project, edit it or access application-specific settings.

Option 1: Open the 3MF in your browser

For a quick inspection, use the 3MF Viewer. A browser viewer is useful when you want to inspect the model visually, confirm that the file contains geometry, check the overall shape, or quickly examine a file received from someone else.

Option 2: Open the 3MF in a slicer

If the 3MF is intended for 3D printing, a modern slicer is often the most useful application. Depending on how it was created, the file may include multiple build items, object positions, units, project metadata, or printer and process information stored by that application. Exactly what is preserved depends on both programs.

Option 3: Open the 3MF in modelling software

Some CAD and 3D-modelling applications also support 3MF. This may be preferable when you want to edit geometry, convert the model, inspect individual objects or continue a design workflow rather than immediately slice the model. Check that the software imports the specific type of 3MF content you need.

Why 3MF files are different from STL files

An STL is primarily a triangle mesh format. A 3MF is a structured package and can contain triangle mesh geometry, explicit units, multiple objects, build items, metadata, colours or materials, and application-specific extensions. Two programs can both support 3MF while supporting different subsets of the information inside a file.

What to do if a 3MF file will not open

1. Try another compatible application

The first program may not understand an extension or application-specific information stored in the 3MF. Try a modern slicer or another 3MF-compatible application.

2. Check whether the file is complete

A partially downloaded or damaged file may fail to open. Download the original again or ask the sender to export a fresh copy.

3. Confirm that it is really a 3MF file

File extensions can be renamed accidentally. A file ending in .3mf is not necessarily a valid 3MF package if it was incorrectly renamed or generated.

4. Try inspecting it with a browser tool

If your slicer rejects the file, try the 3MF Viewer. If supported geometry can still be read, that can distinguish a completely invalid file from an application-compatibility problem.

5. Re-export from the original application

If you have access to the source project, export a new 3MF using the latest version of the application. If the recipient only needs geometry, exporting an STL may also be an option.

Can you convert 3MF to STL?

Often, yes. A slicer or modelling application may load 3MF geometry and export it as STL. Conversion can discard explicit units, multiple object relationships, colours or materials, project metadata and slicer-specific settings. Convert only when you are comfortable losing those parts of the project.
