3D Printer Calibration Guide: What to Calibrate First
Calculate a starting flow correction
Calibration is easier when each test answers one question. Changing temperature, flow, speed and dimensions together may improve a print, but it does not reveal why. Work from basic motion and extrusion towards material settings and finally parts that must fit.
A sensible calibration order
1. Check mechanical basics
Secure belts, pulleys, bed mounting and hot end. A loose pulley, slipping belt or unstable frame creates inconsistent dimensions no slicer calculation can fix. Start with a clean nozzle and smooth filament path.
2. Confirm extrusion broadly
Check the manufacturer procedure for extruder steps or rotation distance where adjustable. Do not hide a mechanical extrusion fault with extreme slicer flow values.
3. Choose a stable material and temperature
Use one dry spool and a known-good profile. Pick a temperature with stable extrusion and acceptable layer bonding before judging fine fit.
4. Calibrate flow
Print a purpose-made single-wall test, measure clean areas and use the Flow Rate Calculator for a starting correction. It is a small material/profile adjustment, not a cure for a blocked nozzle or wrong line width.
5. Check whole-part dimensions
Measure a simple model with known X, Y and Z dimensions. Use the Shrinkage Calculator for consistent axis error. Scaling a whole part does not necessarily make a hole fit a shaft.
6. Tune mating tolerances

Keep a short calibration record
For each material, record printer, nozzle, temperatures, layer height, line width, flow, orientation and date. This makes a successful profile repeatable.
What calibration cannot replace
Calibration does not make a broken model printable. Check downloaded files with STL or 3MF Print Preflight, then confirm placement and supports in the slicer.
