Dimensional accuracy tool

3D Print Shrinkage Calculator

Turn measurements from your own calibration print into per-axis scale compensation for the next model.

Use a test printed with the same printer, material, orientation and slicer profile as the part you are designing. Material names alone do not provide a reliable universal compensation value.

Measure a calibration feature

Print a simple test with known X, Y and Z dimensions. Enter the original model dimension and the caliper measurement for each axis.

X axis

X measured print dimension (mm)

Unmeasured or incomplete: each added reading needs a positive value; excluded readings need a reason. Reset clears this set.

Same nominal size, orientation, measuring direction and process only. Range describes recorded spread, not uncertainty. Excluded values remain in your worksheet.

Y axis

Y measured print dimension (mm)

Unmeasured or incomplete: each added reading needs a positive value; excluded readings need a reason. Reset clears this set.

Same nominal size, orientation, measuring direction and process only. Range describes recorded spread, not uncertainty. Excluded values remain in your worksheet.

Z axis

Z measured print dimension (mm)

Unmeasured or incomplete: each added reading needs a positive value; excluded readings need a reason. Reset clears this set.

Same nominal size, orientation, measuring direction and process only. Range describes recorded spread, not uncertainty. Excluded values remain in your worksheet.

Scale compensation

X axis

Unmeasured or incomplete axis. Enter positive nominal, target and readings. No factor is inherited from another axis.

Y axis

Unmeasured or incomplete axis. Enter positive nominal, target and readings. No factor is inherited from another axis.

Z axis

Unmeasured or incomplete axis. Enter positive nominal, target and readings. No factor is inherited from another axis.

Formula: scale factor = designed test dimension ÷ mean included measured print dimension. The factor is not an average of unrelated scale factors. Compensated model dimension = desired final dimension × scale factor.

A positive shrinkage result means the test print measured smaller than its CAD dimension. A negative result means it measured larger. Confirm important fits with a second test; this calculation does not guarantee final dimensions.

 Calculation:
  Calculator: shrinkage
  Axes:
    X:
      Designed test dimension (mm): 20
      Desired final dimension (mm): 50
      Readings:
Reading 1: not recorded mm; included
Statistics: not recorded / not applicable
Outputs: not recorded / not applicable
    Y:
      Designed test dimension (mm): 20
      Desired final dimension (mm): 50
      Readings:
Reading 1: not recorded mm; included
Statistics: not recorded / not applicable
Outputs: not recorded / not applicable
    Z:
      Designed test dimension (mm): 20
      Desired final dimension (mm): 50
      Readings:
Reading 1: not recorded mm; included
Statistics: not recorded / not applicable
Outputs: not recorded / not applicable
Assumptions: Per-axis factor = designed dimension divided by mean of comparable included measurements. Missing axes remain unmeasured. Factors do not establish reliability or apply to local hole errors or another material/profile.

Planning record, not certified inspection or production acceptance. Range is recorded spread, not instrument uncertainty or total manufacturing tolerance. Only comparable sizes, orientations and conditions may share a set. Validate the proposed adjustment with a representative test.
JSON retains full numerical precision; this readable worksheet rounds calculated values to six decimal places.

Use compensation carefully

  • Set a stable material flow profile first; extrusion consistency and whole-part scale are separate checks.
  • Calculate hole and pin clearance separately; whole-model scaling does not solve every fit problem.
  • Check the exported STL dimensions before slicing.
  • Read the shrinkage compensation guide.
