Split an STL File for 3D Printing

Cut a supported STL along an X, Y or Z plane and download the resulting capped exports. Review both files before slicing; this operation does not design the assembly joint.

Choose an STL and cut position

Opening a file reads it locally for the plane preview. Pressing the split button uploads it for server processing. Choose a non-empty ASCII or binary STL no larger than 25 MiB.

Select a non-empty .stl file, up to 25 MiB.

Try an example

Does the selected source-coordinate plane produce two supported exports?

Settings: Load locally, choose Z at 50%, confirm the displayed coordinate, then explicitly submit. Loading never starts a job.

Downloads this public control, then opens it locally. Your own file can still be chosen above.

A planar cut creates two capped exports

Choose X, Y or Z and a percentage through that axis span. The preview shows the cut plane; it is not a Boolean design editor. The server clips triangles, forms cut contours and caps supported contours. It validates the resulting pieces before returning successful exports. Ambiguous contours or a cut touching unsuitable geometry can be rejected rather than filled by guesswork.

Use the generated 20 mm cube, choose Z at 50%, and submit explicitly. The expected geometric spans are 20 × 20 × 10 coordinate units for each half. Download both pieces, reopen them, check the cut surfaces, closure, dimensions and retained features. This records what to verify; it is not a claim that a physical assembly has been printed.

The splitter uploads only when you explicitly run the cut. STL has no dependable stored unit, so keep the source unit assumption with the outputs. Part A retains coordinates at or below the plane and Part B retains coordinates at or above it; the exports are not recentered. A capped cut does not add adhesive allowance, alignment pins, sockets or mating clearance. Do not scale pieces independently to force them to fit.

Prefer source CAD when a cut must preserve a load path, avoid a hole, add fasteners or define a repeatable joint. Stop when either downloaded piece loses a required feature or the contour is rejected. Diagnose a rejected cut, or choose a seam and verify the assembly plan before orienting and slicing each part.
